South Korea's national sport is taekwondo. 'Way of the hand and foot' is the literal translation of taekwondo. Taekwondo is part of South Korea's military training programme. Kicks, punches, blocks, and open-handed attacks are all used in Taekwondo.
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that emphasises kicks heavily. Various Korean martial artists developed taekwondo in the 1940s and 1950s as a fusion of indigenous Korean fighting techniques such as taekkyeon, gwonbeop, and subak, as well as influences from foreign martial arts such as karate and Chinese martial arts.
The Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA) is the oldest regulating body for Taekwondo, having been founded in 1959 by delegates from the nine original kwans (martial arts schools) in Korea. The International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), formed by General Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the World Taekwon-Do Federation (WTF), founded by the KTA in 1973, are the two primary international organisations for Taekwondo today.
The fundamentals of Taekwondo methods are founded on your body's design. The larger, more powerful torso muscles are developed for power. The rapid, agile muscles of the arms and legs are responsible for the techniques' speed. As you grow in Taekwondo, you will learn to balance speed and force, as well as develop the concentration necessary to concentrate all of your body's strength onto a small, hard striking surface such as the edge of a hand or the heel of a foot.
Despite the fact that the sport is practised by 80 million people worldwide, it is on the decline in the United States.
